Having been to Reading Festival twice as a punter I was really excited to return to this festival for the third time, only this time with my cameras in hand. The line up this year was incredible and so I was really excited to be able to photograph so many incredible acts. As somebody else from my agency was already covering all the main stage artists, I only photographed artists on the other stages. This was quite a new experience for me but allowed me to capture many moments that I otherwise would have missed had I been tasked with covering the main stage. Highlights and photos are below.
One of my favourite artists, Frank Turner, played an intimate solo show in the Festival Republic tent on the Sunday night of the festival. This was actually Frank’s 9th time at Reading Festival! I have photographed Frank 3 times now and I wanted to take a photograph different to the other times I have shot him, which I feel I have achieved with this photo. In the past I have always tried to capture the mellow side of Frank, whereas with this set I wanted a photograph showing more energy.
Grime has started to take off massively in the UK and so it was a big moment for pioneers Boy Better Know to headline the dance tent on Sunday evening. Photographed is JME ontop of a speaker. This set was incredibly hard to photograph due to poor lighting, however I was able to photograph the full show and got some images that I am pretty happy with.
Wolf Alice backstage at Reading Festival, Berkshire, Britain – 29 Aug 2015
This is a moment I would’ve missed had I had main stage access: a surprise set from Wolf Alice on the BBC Introducing stage. I rounded them up for a quick portrait after their set. I really love how these guys pose for their portraits, and so I’d like to think this image captures the personalities of the band well. A highlight of the festival.
Photographing Charli XCX was another highlight of Reading Festival. For this I had access to photograph the entire set from the side of the stage which allowed me to capture a really unique set of images compared to the last time I photographed her. I’m really proud with how this photo has come out as I feel it captures her show well. Both the crowd and Charli were full of energy. I couldn’t resist using a black and white edit on this one to give it a really high impact look.
A new band for me, Beartooth was a band that had been recommended to me by various people and so I wandered over the The Pit stage right before their set and I’m glad I did! I thoroughly recommend them if you’re into catchy metal. For this photo I wanted to create something atmospherical, my only regret is not capturing it when singer, Caleb, had his eyes open.
